Course objectives
The course with orientation on practical aspects of experimental design and its optimization for biology, biomedicine and clinical research including clinical trials. Experimental strategy for dose-response, toxicological and ecotoxicological experiments. Sampling strategy for time series and trend analysis. Optimization of sample size for descriptive and comparative studies. Sample size and experimental design for clinical trials.
Syllabus
  • Types of data and their usage in descriptive and comparative studies, optimization of samples size basic principles.
  • Sampling designs for different types of experiments, sampling design for time series. Random sampling, stratification etc.
  • Aim of the analysis, analysis accuracy, and economical aspects of sampling.
  • Sample size for summary statistics, sample size for comparison of two samples, parametric and non-parametric methods. Sample size for complicated experimental design, analysis of variance in planning of experimental design. Sample size for correlation analysis. Samples size and experimental design for survival analysis. Experimental design for simple and advanced regression models. Experimental design for dose-response experiments.
  • Optimization of sample size for different phases of clinical trials; problems of misinterpretation and problematic results in case of bad sample size and experimental design. Problems of optimization of investigative studies in biology and medicine, under and overestimated sample size, pseudo replications.
  • Sampling strategy and sample size for multivariate analyses.
  • Practical notes on optimization of experimental design. Optimizing according to type of experiment. The art of the correct statistical questioning.
