- Course objectives
- Oncological diseases represent in developed countries, the main cause of death among child diseases. Cancer in children differ significantly from cancer among adults in several areas - types of the disease, an entirely different biological behavior of tumors in children as well as the specifics of the developing child patient. Basic treatment modality in pediatric oncology continues to chemotherapy, with all its adverse effects. High-quality supportive care, including adequate nutritional support is an essential prerequisite for successful treatment of children with cancer.
- Learning outcomes
- The student will know the anticancer treatment, its types according to the treatment method, the principles of nutritional care, undesirable effects of anticancer treatment and their influence, dietary measures during or after the treatment of tumor diseases, the most common dietary adjustments in anticancer treatment. The student is able to create individual nutritional recommendations and educational materials for pediatric oncological patients and carers.
- Syllabus
- 1.Types of tumors, their behavior and diagnostics. 2. Nutritional risks in individual types of childhood cancer 3.Cancer treatment, its types according to the target and treatment methods. Adverse effects of anticancer treatment and possibilities of their influence. Nutrition and related side effects of radiotherapy 4.Special aspects of nutritional evaluation. 5.Special aspects of nutritional support. Dietary measures during or after cancer treatment. Dietary adjustments in the treatment of cancer. 6. Strategy of food intake during oncological treatment. Risk of infections and diet in neutropenia. 7.Enteral nutrition 8.Parenteral nutrition 9.Methods of monitoring and evaluating the status of pediatric patients during hospitalization and outpatient care.
