- Cíle předmětu
- The objective of the course is to focus students learning on a variety of perspectives on historical issues in British history and to critically explore differing points of view on these issues. Geopolitics of Great Britain and the United Kingdom will be also discussed.
Main objectives can be summarized as follows:
to critically explore the historical events
to relate the main events to cultural and social changes in England
to support students in understanding of the cultures of Great Britain - Osnova
- 1. Prehistoric Britain: the Neolithic Era, Prehistoric monuments, Bronz Age Britain, Celtic Britain.
- 2. Roman Britain: from the Roman invasion to life in Roman Britain.
- 3. Anglo-Saxon Britain: King Offa, Alfred the Great, the Danes, the Norman triumph.
- 4. Medieval Britain: from William the Conqueror to the Wars of the Roses.
- 5. The Tudors Era: Henry VII, Henry VIII, and queen Elizabeth I.
- 6. The Stuarts Era: James I, Charles I, the English Civil Wars, Cromwell's Protectorate, Restoration period.
- 7. Hanoverians: from George I to George III.
- 8. Queen Victoria and Victorian Britain: the growth of British Empire.
- 9. Towards World War One: the trade union, the Fabian Movement, WWI.
- 10. From Interbellum period to World War Two: the Irish independence, Hitler and Mussolini, the Munich Agreement, WWII.
- 11. From Decolonization to Margaret Thatcher: the 'welfare state', the Fall of Empire, Decolonization, Thatcher's governments.
- 12. Great Britain and Northern Ireland: Irish Free State, IRA, Battle of the Bogside, 'Bloody Sunday', Direct rule.

1. 80% CLASS ATTENDANCE AND ACTIVE CLASS PARTICIPATION Be ready in class to respond to the questions in the ASSIGNMENTS in the topic 1 - 13.
2. CONTRIBUTE TO AT LEAST 2 DISCUSSION FORUMS One written contribution must contain min. 2 sentences and must be related to the topic posted in the discussion forum.
3. DO ALL THE QUIZES There are 13 quizes in the course. The quizes are designed for students to test their understanding of the topics from British history. Students will be checked if they regularly fill in each test for each topic from the history. Scores students gain from doing the quizes will not count towards the overall evaluation of their work.
4. DO 6 WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS There are 6 written assignments with questions you have to answer. A deadline is set for each assignment and each group, i.e. Tuesday and Thursday group. For the due dates see the 'Written Assignment...' under particular topics. 30 % of all points will be deducted from each assignment that will be submitted after the deadline. The number of questions and points students can earn varies. The maximum and minimum pass for each assignment is given. - Vyučovací jazyk
