Course objectives
The subject introduces scientific thinking to students as essential for successful project planning, implementation and evaluation of educational research.
Syllabus
  • Topics Science and human cognition. Falsifiable model of science in K. R. Popper. Holism in T. S. Kuhns concept. The trend of social sciences development. Interdisciplinary a transdisciplinary issues in sciences. Scientific work as knowledge creation and discovery process. The character and types of scientific work in educational science. Research as a way of realisation in scientific work. Types of educational research. Objectivity, validity and reliability in educational research. Quantitative, qualitative and eclectic approaches in educational science. The project of educational research, its structure. Quantitative research: the research problem definition, variables definition, hypotheses formulation, statistical hypotheses, selection of the sample population, the choice of research methods and techniques. Qualitative research: orientation in the surveyed problem, the research problem definition, the choice of strategy and research methods, selection of the sample, triangulation. An overview of methods and techniques employment in quantitative and qualitative research. Processing and interpretation of research results. The structure and writing of a research report.
