- Course objectives
- The course enriches and systematises students´ knowledge and competences in the field of literary studies and research. The course is focused especially on problems of literary communication.
- Learning outcomes
- Students will be able to explain the development of main trends, problems and conceptions of literary communication. Besides, they will develop their knowledge of approaches originating from Czech literary science. Conception of literature as a specific communicative interaction realising on axis of “the author” – “work of art” – “the reader” helps students to comprehend better what a work of art is, how it arises and how it impacts. Students will improve their critical thinking on literature and works of art, but also on constituent elements of literary communication. New knowledge helps students to interpret literary pieces more complexly and systematically.

- Broader and systematised knowledge in the field of literary communication. 1. Art and science. Literature, literary criticism and theory. Literature and culture. 2. Literature and communication. Communicative and interpretative situations. 3. The axis of communication: the author – work of art – the reader. Another axes of communication: the author − work of art, work of art – the reader, work of art – work of art, work of art – reality, the author – the reader. 4. Theoretical and historical approaches to the notion “the author”. Thesis on the death of the author. Intention and consciousness. Intentionality and unintentionality. 5. Theoretical and historical approaches to the notion “the reader”. Reception and impact. Implicit reader. The open work. Hermeneutics and phenomenology of literature. Sense and significance of work of art. The Constance School. Reader and readership. The sociology of literature: theories and methods. Reading investigation. 6. Theoretical and historical approaches to the notion “work of art”. Literary work of art and literary text. From text to work of art. Intertextuality. The sign and the sign character of literary work of art. Literary work of art as a specific “world”. Mimesis and diegesis. The problems of reperesentation. 7. Fiction. Fictional worlds. The semantics of fictional worlds. The structure of texts and the structure of work of art. 8. The Narrative. Story, narration, and narrative situations. Narratology. 9. Literary work of art as medium. Intermediality. Drama as literary work of art. Literature and theatre. Literature and film. Literature, literary communication and art.

- Teaching methods
- Students will develop their knowledge in the field of literary communication during lectures. Students will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more efficiently. They will creatively use their knowledge gained not only in the classes but also in their individual study of recommended literature which they will be able to discuss regularly with their teacher.
- Assessment methods
- Type of course: lecture. Type of completion: credit. Credit requirements: Student has to hand in a study (min. 10 standard pages) which is inspired by main topics of the course and also by methodological basis of own doctoral thesis. The study must demonstrate student´s knowledge and good orientaton in the fields of literary theory and literary communication. Student has to defend the study in short discussion.
