Course objectives
Having met the course requirements, students are able to describe the changes in the course of the development of Czech literature for children and young adults. They are able to characterize and compare works of the most significant authors.
Learning outcomes
The student is able to independently interpret and critically evaluate literary production for children on the basis of acquired literary-historical topics, to orientate in the book offer and to select suitable titles for literary educational work and for use in interdisciplinary overlaps. The student can analyze literary works taking into account the contemporary literary and socio-historical context.
Syllabus
  • 1. The development of literature for youth in the context of Czech literature before the year 1945. The reaction of literature for youth to the Nazi occupation and the Second World War. Plurality in children´s books published between the years 1948-1948. 2. The situation in literature for youth after the year 1948, changes within the society and their influence on cultural life. The split of literature, specificity of literature for youth. The symptoms of schemes in children´s literature. SNDK publishing house and its impact on literature for youth. Children´s magazines. 3. Instances of innovation in works of the new generation of the 1960s, development of nonsense poetry and tales, so-called new wave of prose for youth, updating the topics of German occupation, comeback of adventure literature and the boom of prose with a female child hero. Convergence of literature and film. Rehabilitation of authors, the end of the publishing monopoly, activities of regional publishing houses. 4. Incoming normalization – negative and positive aspects and influences. Asylum of the authors who were banned to publish their books for children. Continuity and discontinuity of genres and topics in literature for children and youth. Standardized literary characters, techniques and language in works of acknowledged authors. Outstanding personalities of the 70s and 80s. Theory and criticism in children´s literature, changes of Zlatý máj magazine.
