At the end of the course the students should be able to explain the problems of the past and the present of European integration.

Syllabus
1. History and Roots of Integration: Key ideas in post-World War I Europe, Coudenhove-Kalergi, Paneuropean Union, Briand, Herriot, integration projects of organizations (League of Nations, Union for International Unity). 2. History of Integration and Post-War Development: Projects during World War II: exile governments, resistance movements, British initiatives; post-war integration movements (Monnet, Schuman, ECSC). 3. Integration Theories: Federalism, functionalism, neo-functionalism, intergovernmentalism and liberal intergovernmentalism, multi-level governance, constructivist frameworks. 4. EU Treaties – Origins and First Enlargement: Rome Treaties (EEC, Euratom), ECSC, role of Delors, de Gaulle, the empty chair crisis, Luxembourg Compromise. 5. EU Treaties II – Consolidation and Maastricht: Maastricht Treaty, Amsterdam, Lisbon, political and institutional changes, new forms of decision-making and political union. 6. EU Enlargement and Integration in Practice: Enlargement to the south, north, and east (Copenhagen Criteria, accession treaties), European identity and integration of new members. 7. EU Institutions I: European Parliament, Council of the EU, European Commission, European Council and its role, institutional interactions, trilogue negotiations. 8. EU Institutions II: Court of Justice of the EU, ECB, principle of subsidiarity, legal framework, oversight mechanisms and decision-making processes. 9. EU Policies – Economy and Market: Single market, free movement of goods, services, people, euro and economic governance. 10. EU Policies – Social Policy and Migration: European citizenship and rights, Schengen, asylum policy, European social pillar, migration challenges. 11. EU Law: Primary and secondary law, application of regulations and legislative process, dispute resolution: member states, institutions, individuals. 12. EU and the World: Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), relations with NATO, USA, Russia, and China, trade agreements, global role of the EU. 13. Future of the EU and Current Status: Brexit, Euroscepticism, regional separatism, scenarios of future integration vs. disintegration.
