Course objectives
The course will adress the visual strategies of Holy roman emperors in the early modern period. The first part will focus on general issues related image and ideology, myths and legends, the importance of genealogy or religious cults. The second part will focus on practical application of these ideas in contemporary art, the specific strategies and the visual perception of images of power.
Syllabus
  • Translatio imperii and the ideology of the Holy Roman Empire • Myths and Legends: The Trojan War, Golden Fleece, knightly tradition and eschatological prophecies • Genealogy, continuity and legitimacy of the Emperors • Habsburg ideology: the cult of the Eucharist, pietas austriaca, Order of the Golden Fleece • Images and its viewers • Louis XIV., Leopold I and the war of images • Festivities and ceremonies at the Vienna and Paris in the 17th and 18th century • Media of propaganda: architecture, painting, sculpture, crafts, graphics, collecting • Ideologues, artists and academy • On the way to the modern state: an enlightened ruler, reforming society, and new media
