Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide the student with an overview of Italian history from the eighteenth century to the present day, to draw attention to the characteristic features of Italian history, to cultural and artistic developments (painting, sculpture, architecture, music, film) and important events of recent decades.
Learning outcomes
The student will be able to: -identify and summarize important features of Italian history since the 18th century; -confront historical development with cultural development and place the most important artists, cultural and political figures in a social and historical context; -orientation in the key events of the 20th and 21st centuries in Italy; - more detailed analysis of one of the key moments of Italian history/culture/art.

  • - 18.-19. century: Italy at the time of Napoleon, Risorgimento (Carbonaires, the process of the unification of Italy), neoclassicism; - United Italy, colonialism, migration; - Art at the turn of the century (Belle Epoque, Futurism); - First World War - Fascism - World War II - Post-war Italy (art - film, political situation); - The second half of the 20th century - The last decade

Teaching methods
Lectures, discussions, reading.
Assessment methods
Written test and oral exam. The student will be admitted to the oral part of the exam only after successfully passing the written test. The written test will check the knowledge of the subject matter (65% is required). For the oral part, the student will prepare an interpretation of one of the key moments/currents/personalities of Italian history/culture/art according to their own preferences (the choice of topic must be consulted with the teacher during the semester).
