Course objectives
At the end of the course the students should be acquainted with: • the chronological articulation of the wide concept of “Early Greek Art” • the development in the depiction of human figure • the techniques of vase painting • the techniques of bronze • the meaning of the main types of statues (gods; kouroi; korai; horsemen) • the birth and development of monumental architecture in stone • the development of sculptural architectonical decoration (friezes and pedimental compositions) • the original polychromy of stone and marble reliefs, statues and buildings
Syllabus
  • Subjects of the lessons (ten 2-hour lessons): 1. Proto-Geometric and Geometric Art. The rebirth of Greek culture 2. 7th-century sculpture. Orientalizing style; Dedalic style; Materials: clay, stone, marble, bronze and its techniques (sphyrelata; solid lost-wax cast; hollow lost-wax cast by indirect method). The first korai and kouroi 3. Pottery as comparison: Shapes; Orientalizing; Corinthian 4. 6th-century sculpture. Part One. Free-standing figures: kouroi and other male figures 5. 6th-century sculpture. Part Two. Free-standing figures: korai and other female figures 6. Pottery as comparison: 6th-century Athens 7. A glance to architecture: the Doric and the Ionic temple. Architectonical sculpture. Part One. Pediments, 1: the Temple of Artemis at Corfu; The temples of the Athenian Acropolis; The Temple of Apollo at Delphi. 8. Architectonical sculpture. Part Two. Pediments, 2: The marble pediments of the Athenian Acropolis; The Temple of Athena Aphaia at Aegina 9. Architectonical sculpture. Part Three. The Doric frieze: The Sykionans’ treasury at Delphi; The temples at Selinunte; The Heraion at the mouth of the river Sele; The Athenians’ treasury at Delphi 10. Architectonical sculpture. Part Four. Course objectives
At the end of the course the students should be acquainted with: • the chronological articulation of the wide concept of “Early Greek Art” • the development in the depiction of human figure • the techniques of vase painting • the techniques of bronze • the meaning of the main types of statues (gods; kouroi; korai; horsemen) • the birth and development of monumental architecture in stone • the development of sculptural architectonical decoration (friezes and pedimental compositions) • the original polychromy of stone and marble reliefs, statues and buildings

  • Subjects of the lessons (ten 2-hour lessons): 1. Proto-Geometric and Geometric Art. The rebirth of Greek culture 2. 7th-century sculpture. Orientalizing style; Dedalic style; Materials: clay, stone, marble, bronze and its techniques (sphyrelata; solid lost-wax cast; hollow lost-wax cast by indirect method). The first korai and kouroi 3. Pottery as comparison: Shapes; Orientalizing; Corinthian 4. 6th-century sculpture. Part One. Free-standing figures: kouroi and other male figures 5. 6th-century sculpture. Part Two. Free-standing figures: korai and other female figures 6. Pottery as comparison: 6th-century Athens 7. A glance to architecture: the Doric and the Ionic temple. Architectonical sculpture. Part One. Pediments, 1: the Temple of Artemis at Corfu; The temples of the Athenian Acropolis; The Temple of Apollo at Delphi. 8. Architectonical sculpture. Part Two. Pediments, 2: The marble pediments of the Athenian Acropolis; The Temple of Athena Aphaia at Aegina 9. Architectonical sculpture. Part Three. The aim of the course is to make the students acquainted with the essential principles of the beginnings and early development of greek art from the late 11th to the early 5th century B. C.The student should get the knowledge to date and recognize the monuments of Archaic Greek art

Course objectives
The aim of the course is make the students acquainted with the essential principles of the beginnings and early evolution of greek art from the late 11th to the early 5th century B. C.The student should get the capacity to date and recogniye the monuments of Archaic Greek art:

Course objectives
Semestrální přednáška shrnujícící počátky řeckého umění začínající výkladem o vývoji řecké kultury v geometrickém a archaickém období. Vychází se z charakteristiky řecké mentality, vztahu k poznání, k okolnímu světu a vyspělým kulturám Předního východu a Egypta. Cílem přednášky je podrobné seznámení se všemi oblastmi řeckého umění od počátku 1. tisíciletí př. Kr. do konce 7. století př., Kr.(archeologie a umění proto-geometrického a geometrického období, orientalizující styly, a počátek archaického umění do poloviny 6. století) Hlavní pozornost je soustředěna na stylový vývoj vázového malířství, sochařství a architektury, vývoj drobné bronzové a terakotové plastiky a dalších uměleckých řemesel.

The beginnings of Greek art, the development of Greek culture in the geometric and archaic periods; the development of architecture, sculpture, painting and crafts.
Syllabus (in Czech)
  • Geometrické a archaické období. Semestrální přednáška shrnujícící počátky řeckého umění začínající výkladem o vývoji řecké kultury v geometrickém a archaickém období. Vychází se z charakteristiky řecké mentality, vztahu k poznání, k okolnímu světu a vyspělým kulturám Předního východu a Egypta. V jednotlivých obdobích se probírá vývoj architektury, sochařství, malířství (mimo vázového, protože jeho výklad je předmětem samostatné přednášky) a uměleckého řemesla. Na přednášku tématicky navazuje obsah semináře klasické archeologie.

Course objectives
At the end of the course the students should be acquainted with: • the chronological articulation of the wide concept of “Early Greek Art” • the development in the depiction of human figure • the techniques of vase painting • the techniques of bronze • the meaning of the main types of statues (gods; kouroi; korai; horsemen) • the birth and development of monumental architecture in stone • the development of sculptural architectonical decoration (friezes and pedimental compositions) • the original polychromy of stone and marble reliefs, statues and buildings

  • Subjects of the lessons (ten 2-hour lessons): 1. Proto-Geometric and Geometric Art. The rebirth of Greek culture 2. 7th-century sculpture. Orientalizing style; Dedalic style; Materials: clay, stone, marble, bronze and its techniques (sphyrelata; solid lost-wax cast; hollow lost-wax cast by indirect method). The first korai and kouroi 3. Pottery as comparison: Shapes; Orientalizing; Corinthian 4. 6th-century sculpture. Part One. Free-standing figures: kouroi and other male figures 5. 6th-century sculpture. Part Two. Free-standing figures: korai and other female figures 6. Pottery as comparison: 6th-century Athens 7. A glance to architecture: the Doric and the Ionic temple. Architectonical sculpture. Part One. Course objectives
At the end of the course the students should be acquainted with: • the chronological articulation of the wide concept of “Early Greek Art” • the development in the depiction of human figure • the techniques of vase painting • the techniques of bronze • the meaning of the main types of statues (gods; kouroi; korai; horsemen) • the birth and development of monumental architecture in stone • the development of sculptural architectonical decoration (friezes and pedimental compositions) • the original polychromy of stone and marble reliefs, statues and buildings

  • Subjects of the lessons (ten 2-hour lessons): 1. Proto-Geometric and Geometric Art. The rebirth of Greek culture 2. 7th-century sculpture. Orientalizing style; Dedalic style; Materials: clay, stone, marble, bronze and its techniques (sphyrelata; solid lost-wax cast; hollow lost-wax cast by indirect method). The first korai and kouroi 3. Pottery as comparison: Shapes; Orientalizing; Corinthian 4. 6th-century sculpture. Part One. Free-standing figures: kouroi and other male figures 5. 6th-century sculpture. Part Two. Free-standing figures: korai and other female figures 6. Pottery as comparison: 6th-century Athens 7. A glance to architecture: the Doric and the Ionic temple. Architectonical sculpture. Part One. Course objectives
At the end of the course the students should be acquainted with: • the chronological articulation of the wide concept of “Early Greek Art” • the development in the depiction of human figure • the techniques of vase painting • the techniques of bronze • the meaning of the main types of statues (gods; kouroi; korai; horsemen) • the birth and development of monumental architecture in stone • the development of sculptural architectonical decoration (friezes and pedimental compositions) • the original polychromy of stone and marble reliefs, statues and buildings

  • Subjects of the lessons (ten 2-hour lessons): 1. Proto-Geometric and Geometric Art. The rebirth of Greek culture 2. 7th-century sculpture. Orientalizing style; Dedalic style; Materials: clay, stone, marble, bronze and its techniques (sphyrelata; solid lost-wax cast; hollow lost-wax cast by indirect method). The first korai and kouroi 3. Pottery as comparison: Shapes; Orientalizing; Corinthian 4. 6th-century sculpture. Part One. Free-standing figures: kouroi and other male figures 5. 6th-century sculpture. Part Two. Free-standing figures: korai and other female figures 6. Pottery as comparison: 6th-century Athens 7. A glance to architecture: the Doric and the Ionic temple. Architectonical sculpture. Part One. Course objectives
At the end of the course the students should be acquainted with: • the chronological articulation of the wide concept of “Early Greek Art” • the development in the depiction of human figure • the techniques of vase painting • the techniques of bronze • the meaning of the main types of statues (gods; kouroi; korai; horsemen) • the birth and development of monumental architecture in stone • the development of sculptural architectonical decoration (friezes and pedimental compositions) • the original polychromy of stone and marble reliefs, statues and buildings

  • Subjects of the lessons (ten 2-hour lessons): 1. Proto-Geometric and Geometric Art. The rebirth of Greek culture 2. 7th-century sculpture. Orientalizing style; Dedalic style; Materials: clay, stone, marble, bronze and its techniques (sphyrelata; solid lost-wax cast; hollow lost-wax cast by indirect method). The first korai and kouroi 3. Pottery as comparison: Shapes; Orientalizing; Corinthian 4. 6th-century sculpture. Part One. Free-standing figures: kouroi and other male figures 5. 6th-century sculpture. Part Two. Free-standing figures: korai and other female figures 6. Pottery as comparison: 6th-century Athens 7. A glance to architecture: the Doric and the Ionic temple. Architectonical sculpture. Part One. Pediments, 1: the Temple of Artemis at Corfu; The temples of the Athenian Acropolis; The Temple of Apollo at Delphi. 8. Architectonical sculpture. Part Two. Pediments, 2: The marble pediments of the Athenian Acropolis; The Temple of Athena Aphaia at Aegina 9. Architectonical sculpture. Part Three. The aim of the course is to make the students acquainted with the essential principles of the beginnings and early development of greek art from the late 11th to the early 5th century B. C.The student should get the knowledge to date and recognize the monuments of Archaic Greek art

Course objectives
Semestrální přednáška shrnujícící počátky řeckého umění začínající výkladem o vývoji řecké kultury v geometrickém a archaickém období. Vychází se z charakteristiky řecké mentality, vztahu k poznání, k okolnímu světu a vyspělým kulturám Předního východu a Egypta. Cílem přednášky je podrobné seznámení se všemi oblastmi řeckého umění od počátku 1. tisíciletí př. Kr. do konce 7. století př., Kr.(archeologie a umění proto-geometrického a geometrického období, orientalizující styly, a počátek archaického umění do poloviny 6. století) Hlavní pozornost je soustředěna na stylový vývoj vázového malířství, sochařství a architektury, vývoj drobné bronzové a terakotové plastiky a dalších uměleckých řemesel.

The beginnings of Greek art, the development of Greek culture in the geometric and archaic periods; the development of architecture, sculpture, painting and crafts.
Syllabus (in Czech)
  • Geometrické a archaické období. Semestrální přednáška shrnujícící počátky řeckého umění začínající výkladem o vývoji řecké kultury v geometrickém a archaickém období. Vychází se z charakteristiky řecké mentality, vztahu k poznání, k okolnímu světu a vyspělým kulturám Předního východu a Egypta. V jednotlivých obdobích se probírá vývoj architektury, sochařství, malířství (mimo vázového, protože jeho výklad je předmětem samostatné přednášky) a uměleckého řemesla. Na přednášku tématicky navazuje obsah semináře klasické archeologie.
