Cíle předmětu
The aim of this course is to reconstruct the interactions between European and Chinese individuals from the late 16th century to the 18th century. It focuses on the transmission of European ideas, material culture and technologies to China. At the same time, it offers an overview on the reception of Chinese culture in Europe starting from the end of the Ming dynasty until the death of the Emperor Qianlong in 1799. The course will take into consideration the interaction between European individuals, including especially Jesuit missionaries, and Chinese elites including their cross-cultural exchanges with Chinese individuals from lower social classes. The course will be stemming from the textual sources concerning this initial interaction and it will take into consideration artworks, technological works and other sources that were adopted to foster the encounters between the Chinese population and the European missionaries and merchants. It will take into consideration also the formation of complex and global identities of Chinese Christian converts and European individuals who embraced Chinese culture and civilization. At the end of the course, the students will have a general understanding of the interactions between European and Chinese individuals in the given period from different viewpoints.

After completing the course a student will be able to: -Reconstruct the complex interactions between Europe and China between 1500 and 1800 -Analyze the main European and Chinese sources provided during the course - Describe the relevance of individuals, both in China and in Europe, that reshaped Sino-European exchanges -Critically evaluate the importance of European merchants, missionaries and diplomats in China - Critically evaluate the importance of Chinese individuals and Chinese Christian converts in the interaction with Europe
