Course objectives
The course gives students the opportunity to read original Latin texts although they know only basic Latin grammar. At the same time, it introduces them into medieval Latin which is important for accessing sources of our history and culture.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, students will able to:
- read and translate a simple original medieval Latin text (e.g. chronicle, legend, preaching, visio, hymn, sequence, epic poetry, charter, letter, exemplum, a short passage of scholarly texts);
- comprehend specific features of medieval Latin pertaining to its graphical forms, morphology and style.

Teaching methods
One 1.5 hours class per week consisting of a lecture and a seminar.
Assessment methods
Requirements for acquiring a credit: oral examination during which students are obliged to show the ability to translate simple medieval Latin text as well as to describe elementary features of medieval Latin. Class attendance is required.
