Course objectives
The aim of the course is to present to the students the contents of the field of Modern Greek studies as a scholarly discipline and its auxiliary disciplines; it informs the students about the main scholarly literature and subsidiary instruments necessary for philological work (dictionaries, bibliographies, electronic information resources etc.); it provides the students with skills to search the relevant titles for the special problems of the discipline; it provides basic characteristics of the development of Modern Greek language; it provides information about the history of the field of study and about translations of the Modern Greek literature; further it offers instructions for writing scholarly texts and citation conventions.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to characterize the aim of the Modern Greek Studies and have an overview of its auxiliary disciplines; to be well informed about the basic scholarly literature and subsidiary instruments for philological work; to search the relevant titles for the special problems of the discipline. The students will be informed about the translations of the Modern Greek Literature and about the history of the field of study. They will be oriented in the development of Modern Greek language. They will know how to write a scholarly text and how to cite scientific works according to citation conventions.
Syllabus
  • 1. Basic information about the aim of Modern Greek Studies and their position within the framework of Greek Studies.
  • 2. Auxiliary and subsidiary disciplines.
  • 3. Basic scholarly literature and subsidiary instruments for philological work (dictionaries, encyclopaedias, journals and series, bibliography).
  • 4. Electronic resources, online databases of Modern Greek texts
  • 5.-7. Problems of the development of Modern Greek language, its relation to other Balkan languages.
  • 8. History of Modern Greek studies abroad and in the Czech Republic.
  • 9. Translations from Modern Greek.
  • 10.-13. How to write a student paper; citation conventions; transcription and transliteration rules for Greek alphabet.
  • Lectures will be supplemented by practical tasks concerning the discussed themes.
