- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to give the geographical, political, social, economy and cultural characteristics of Russia as the largest country in the world, the multinational state with the rich culture that steps in the Europe and Asia and, at the same time, the great power whose domineering policy causes controversary. The student will learn about the realia, cultural background and socio-political development of Russia from the dissolution of the Soviet Union up to the present.
- Learning outcomes
- After finishing the course, the student will be able:
- to describe the major features of the Russian state and society over the past 30 years;
- to characterize the Russian political system and the foreign policy position of Russia;
- to understand the mutual position and the relationship between particular federal subjects of Russia;
- to explain the significance of orthodoxy in the Russian society and to clarify the position of other religions in Russia;
- to argue about the Russian economy structure;
- to discuss the problems of modern Russia. - Syllabus
- 1. The Milestones of the Russian Historical, Political and Social Development from the Soviet Union up to the Present.
- 2. The Political Characteristics of Russia (the interference in the international scope, structure and the current image of the executive and the legislative power, the main federal subjects and the participants of the Russian political life).
- 3 The Russian Federation (administrative divisions, federal subjects and their position as part of the whole, the state symbols).
- 4. The Geographic Characteristics of Russia (position, borders, area, relief, regions, cities).
- 5. The Economic Characteristics of Russian (the key economic indicators, the economic structure of the country and its particular oblasts, the currency, natural wealth, significant industrial enterprises, the economy and state power).
- 6. The Demographic, National and Religious Characteristics of Russia (demographic trends, national and religious structure of the population, the Russian diaspora).
- 7. The Everyday Life (the state and religion holidays, Russian cuisine, the key problems and the questions of the modern Russian society).
