Course objectives
Gustav Machatý was one of the major filmmakers of the Czech cinema between the wars, and the first director to follow the modern trends. He achieved the international reputation for his films Erotikon (Eroticon, 1929), Ze soboty na neděli (From Saturday to Sunday, 1931) and, above all, the sensational Extase (Ecstasy, 1932), which won the prize at the Venice Film Festival in 1933. Literature: Brož, Jaroslav/Frída, Myrtil: Gustav Machatý - legenda a skutečnost, in: Film a doba, 1969, no. 4-7. Czech feature film I, II, NFA, Prague 1995 and 1998. Assessment: essay (10 pages).
