Course objectives
A selection of plays by Shakespeare and his contemporaries. An outline of the cultural, historical and social background of the era; physical specifics of the Elizabethan stage and of the dramatic techniques and principles. The development of the play and the generic range. An introduction to the semiotics of theatre.
Syllabus
  • The selection of the plays and the schedule will be specified in due time. The bibliography to this course will be based on recent translations of Shakespeare's plays and those of his contemporaries (to be found mostly in the three-volume Czech anthology _Alzbetinske divadlo_). The rest will be either specified or given to the students in the form of handouts by the teacher. Willingness to read materials in English will be welcomed. The seminars require an active work of students on a weekly basis.
