Course objectives
Film, Science and Public Education: In the succession of the development in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy the efforts in the field of cultural and educational function of cinema emerged also in the independent Czechoslovak republic. Institutions interested in public education praised the educational values of the film medium, on the other hand they warned of the present dangerous, sensational film production. In their fight for the „right“ influence on children the legislation and educational institutions behaved in two ways – they controlled audiences and regulated movies in the distribution through the censorship. School film, established as the educational tool in the year 1936, followed in the tradition of cultural and educational cinematography, as well as in the tradition of research and scientific cinematography, as practiced at universities. The course should present the coordination of the film industry and educational and scientific institutions in the Czechoslovakia especially in the interwar period and outlined the development of the usage of film at schools, the establishment of educational broadcasting and educational video, and other audiovisual educational tools. The main corpus of literature for this course will be based on archival material and period publications.
