- Course objectives
- Lecture is devoted to development of Norwegian literature from early beginnings to the end of the 19th century. Attention is concentrated on main tendencies and most important authors and on analysis of some outstanding works. Special attention is paid to classical authors of the second half of the 19th century,
- Syllabus
- The oldest period of Scandinavian literature (early Icelandic literature, its golden period in the 12th century). Medieval literature, especially folk-ballads. Reformation and baroque. Enlightment, especially L.Holberg. Preromanticism and romanticism. Norway in the 19th century, national revival. Discussions about further orientation of Norwegian culture (Welhaven versus Wergeland). Problem of language, the role of Danish culture. Fairy-tales and folk culture. Most important authors of the second half of the 19th century: Ibsen, Björnson, Kielland and Lie.
