Course objectives
At the end of the lecture course students should be able to analyze the phenomena of traditional culture of Slovakia, conduct comparative studies and evaluate analogies and differences between Czech and Slovak cultures. The course objective is to provide basic information on Slovak folk culture in its historical development.
Syllabus
  • Genesis and development of traditional culture of the Slovak ethnic group (Slavic roots, medieval colonization). Relationships with the culture of the Hungarians and of neighbouring ethnic groups. Cultural development from the 18th to the 20th centuries. Lowland and highland types of culture. Ethnographic regionalization and differentiation. Characteristic features of material, social and spiritual culture of the Slovak people.
