Course objectives
In the end of this course the students should understand better the modern brazilian society, his culture and way of life. From this point they should be prepared to interpretate from a critical point of view the daily problems faced by brazilian people, taking academic texts and discussions as development bases.
Syllabus
  • In this discipline we'll explore the complexities regarding the social-political and cultural environment present in the daily life in Brazil. The chronic problems and the strong points of brazilian roots will be boarded in depth of a critical point of view. These are some of the topics to be discussed in our classes: - The historical moments which helped to build the modern national identity
  • - The political problems in Brazil
  • - The historical social problems
  • - The roots of brazil urban violence
  • - The social manifestations in Brazil

Teaching methods
The classes will be pointed by oral explanations, group discussions, readings and video presentations related with the subjects.
Assessment methods
In the end of this course, the students will present a final paper regarding some topic boarded in classroom. Paralel projects can be requested to explore the issues more properly.
