- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to introduce student into the basic problems linked to the question of the spiritual roots of Europe with the special emphasis on the reflexions of Jan Patocka on this issue. Students will gain basic knowledge of chief topics of Patockas philosophy, i.e. of his phenomenological analysis of the life-world and of human existence, as wall as of his philosophy of history. Further, students will gain a rather detailed knowldge of Patockas writings on the crisis and the spiritual roots of Europe. The main emphasis will be laid on the explanation and the analysis of Patockas thesis that the most basic spiritual foundation of Europe is the socratic-platonic "care of the soul". Students will acquire ability to reflect critically on Patockas conception of the spiritual roots of Europe and see it in the light of other important contributions to this topic. The final aim of the course is to help students to perfect their ability to relfect critically and with philosophical precision their own cultural identity.
