Course objectives
At the end of the course students will:
have a broader and more solid understanding of knowledge gained in Bachelor's degree course 'Library systems and standards';
be able to discuss and critically evaluate primarily those library activities, which are today mostly influenced by an expansion of the Internet and related technologies;
demonstrate an understanding of developments in area of automated library systems, bibligraphic description, technical resources for collection management and document digitization, new ways of communication etc.;
be able to make oral and written presentations on a concept of Library 2.0 with its orientation on user and on perpetual development and inovations of services.
Syllabus
  • From Web 2.0 to Library 2.0
  • New communication technologies in libraries (instant messaging, IP telephony, WAP, collaborative systems, blogging, RSS, podcasting, vodcasting)
  • Trends in library systems and OPAC development (OPAC 3rd generation, searching vs browsing, kinds of information presentations, recommendations, data visualization, personalization)
  • Connecting library and other information systems (OpenURL and link resolvers, permalinks, link-in interface, web services, SRU/SRW, OAI-PMH, Amazon API)
  • Metadata (resource description using RDF, library formats MARCXML, MODS, MADS, RDA rules, related formats DC, ONIX, EAD; promotion data, user added metadata, tagging, folksonomies)
  • Conceptual models (FRBR, CIMI CRM)
  • Bibliomining (data warehauses in libraries, usage based datamining)
  • HW resources for collection management (barcodes, chip technology RFID, wireless technology, collection protection, SelfCheck)
  • Retrospective conversion of card catalogues (Retrokon, cards OCR)
  • Documents digitizing (book scanners, scaning robots)

Teaching methods
One 2 hour seminar per week where after a theme presentation a class discussion will continue.
Discussions will also take place at the web in wiki system, where all students will cooperate and contribute to collecting information about themes presented at class.
Assessment methods
At the end of semester students will write final paper (of about 3000 words) on chosen topic.
