Course objectives
At the end of this course students should have a working knowledge of the outline of English literature from its beginnings to the end of the 15th century. With the help of some recent criticism, students should be able identify and interpret the Old English genres such as riddles, elegies, heroic and religious poetry as well as chronicles. They will be able to explain the differences between those and Middle English genres of romances, tales and popular lyrics. The students will acquire survey knowledge of the period and develop skills of critical reading of literary texts.
