Course objectives
The aim of this course is to introduce main topics of vocabulary, mainly etymology, semantics and lexicology in general. After absolving this course, student should be able to analyse basic dictionary on his own and understood more about its evolution. Emphasis will be on practical analysis.
Learning outcomes
After absolving this course, student will be able to: - Work independently with Slavic vocabulary;
- Identify words of the same origin and analyse them;
- Understood etymological interpretations and use etymological dictionaries;
- Define relations between words in the same group.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to Indo-European and Slavic languages, lexicon in general. Slavic languages and differentiation of vocabulary – changes in Slavic languages, influence of other languages (geographical, cultural and other). 2. Etymology, etymological dictionaries, literature. Comparative etymology. 3. Phonetic changes and evolution of lexicon. Homonyms, faux amis – shifts in semantics, semantic differentiation, archaisms, absence of some terms in different languages. 4. Practical example: Kinship terminology. 5. Practical example: Meteorological phenomenon. 6. Practise. 7. Practise. 8. Practise. 9. Practise. 10. Practise. 11. Bank holiday. 12. Bank holiday. 13. Teaching methods
Lectures and group projects in seminars.
Assessment methods
Presence on seminaries is obligatory (week 6 - 10) - maximum 1 absence. Student needs to prepare list of terms in different languages in advance. In seminaries active participation of students is required (work in group and presentation of outcomes). If fulfilled, student will be granted credits for this course.
