- Course objectives
- This course gives an overview of Dutch literature – i.e. literature written in Dutch - from the 20th and 21st century. Students are introduced in the Dutch and Flemish literary field by means of capita selecta: in every class the focus is on a specific author, his/her oeuvre or a literary movement (cf. overview). Attention is payed to the cultural and historical context the works and/or movements originate from. Beside this, the current significance of the authors and works is discussed – their importance in the comtemporary literary field and the part they play in contemporary society. Poems, short stories and parts of novels are used as illustration material and are analysed in class. Main objective of this course is not only to make the students acquainted with authors and titles of books that are considered of importance, they should also be able to understand and analyse literary texts. In the first term the period from the beginning of the 20th century until the sixties is dealt with.
