- Course objectives
- At the end of the course the students should be able to understand the history of modern Vietnam (including the chronology and internal development of the country) in relation to other countries of Southeast Asia. Students will have basic informations about the influence of colonial powers and wars of the 19th and 20th centuries on contemporary Vietnam.
- Syllabus
- 1. Portuguese and Jesuits in Vietnam. 2. Contacts with colonial powers. 3. French invasion and domination. 4. Limits of colonial development in French Indochina. 5. Vietnamese national revival, modernisation, birth of Vietnamese communism and other political parties. Forms of Vietnamese resistence against the French. 6. Worsening of ecomonics before the World War II. 7. Vietnamese democratic republic, division into Northern and Southern Vietnam. 8. International influences in Northern and Southern Vietnam. 9. American war in Vietnam. 10. Reunification of Vietnam. 11. Contemporary postwar modernization and development. 12. History of Vietnamese in foreign countries.
