Course objectives
The course is focused on program strategy and program trends of public service television.
The course is divided into 6 sections which systematically present the issues of TV program creation, broadcasting scheme, target groups, broadcast channels and program genres and formats.
Besides the theoretical and terminological introduction, the course is based on practical examples based on current TV practice.
Learning outcomes
After finishing this course, students will have been able to:
Understand the issues of public service television and specific program strategies.
Understand the issues of television programming and broadcasting.
Understand the issues of TV genres and formats.
Analyze the program scheme.
Syllabus
  • This course will focus on following areas:
  • 1) Introduction to basic concepts of TV programming, principles of program composition and planning.
  • 2) Creation of broadcasting scheme, its individual blocks and broadcast windows.
  • 3) Categorization of programs, introduction of basic TV genres and formats and their use in  the program.
  • 4) Definition of target groups, explanation of basic concepts in the field of audience research (specator surveys, ratings, satisfaction).
  • 5) Characteristics and content of full-format and specialized TV channels.
  • 6) Television programs on various platforms (web, mobile applications, hybrid TV).

Teaching methods
Lectures and screenings with examples of Czech and foreign TV programs.
Assessment methods
Written assignment: analysis of program scheme of a selected TV channel, range: 9,000 characters.
