Course objectives
The lecture and seminar will familiarize the students with the Early and Late Stone Age in the territory of Central Europe. The students will gradually acquire a grasp of the basic cultures and issues; they will also learn to recognize archaeological material of the Neolithic and Eneolithic periods. A stress will be laid on an outline of the development of views on the studied primeval epoch on the one hand, and the issues of the individual development stages within Early and Late Stone Age on the other hand. New and problematic knowledge that ensue from the current state of research and the newest theories will also be referred to. The differences of the Early and Late Stone Age, not only in the material culture but also in the spiritual sphere will be pointed out too.
Syllabus
  • Problems of the neolitisation in middle Europe: survey of the theories and models. Dividing of Young Stone Age into single parts: early, middle and young (late) Neolithic. Survey of the cultures and thein synchronization. Linear pottery culture, their origin, spread and periodization based on the pottery decoration style and forms of vessels.
  • The farming settlements, burial practices and rites, single graves in the settlement pits. Cult manifestation, human clay figurines, special objects.
  • Characterization of the „postlinear“ period: origin, spread and periodization of the Stroked pottery culture and Želiezovce-group in SW Slovakia. Origin, spread, periodization and close of the Bükk-culture.
  • The origin of the Lengyel culture. Prelengyel and Protolengyel in SW Slovakia and west Hungary. Reception of the Protolengyel in Lower Austria. Different situation in Moravia and Czech lands: late stage of Stroked pottery culture go on.
  • Settlements situation, problems of the so-called rondels. Cult manifestation, human and animal clay figurines. The funeral rituals.
  • Late Neolithic intercultural relations and the end of the Lengyel culture.
