Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce the students of German Studies to the field of productive and up-to-date approaches to literature analysis and their methodologies, both theoretical and applied. The lecture series is occupied by about half by visiting scholars. Each lecture offers - according to the schedule and the lecturer's decision - a certain strategy of work with text / context in the German Studies, which is presented in general on selected text snippet. These probes may evolve from basic, generally known approaches (hermeneutics, structuralism, etc.), through less common ones (receptive aesthetics, postcolonialism) to inspirational tendencies off-mainstream (such as digital humanities).
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the students will:
- get basic orientation in both classical and less frequent literary approaches,
- understand theories and methodologies of German Studies as tools to "open up" the text or its particular aspect,
- be able to reflect the theoretical and methodological basis of their own (diploma) project.
Syllabus
  • The exact schedule of each semester is determined by what lecturers are included. As for topics, it always includes: 1. Classical literary theories and their practice (hermeneutics, structuralism, etc.) 2. Approaches to literature interpretation in German Studies that were established in the second half of the 20th century (literary sociology, receptive aesthetics, discourse analysis, narratology, etc.) 3. Latest tendencies in literatary criticism in German Studies and their applications (digital humanities, post-imperialism vs. postcolonialism, spatial turn etc.) Each lecture presents a selected approach / methodology and offers their applications in text analysis.
