Course objectives

Comparative lectures about modern history of Vietnam and Korea, about various sources of the data, various interpretations and also political attitudes to the topic of war present a set of own analyses and critical reviews based on reading, methodological investigations and own business trips in Vietnam, South Korea and also talks with North-Korean students.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course a student will be able to compare and analyse the development of wars in Vietnam and Korea from following points of view:
Cultural,
Historical,
Economic and politics,
Development of international relations and spreading of influence of world powers,
Economic and social consequences of wars as well as their influence on foreign relations,
Killing in wars, losses of lives and their influence on internal politics,
Development of foreing relations of Vietnam and Korea in particular stages of the wars
Images of war in Vietnamese and Korean culture
Comparison of northern and southern parts of Vietnam and Korea,
Question of unification,
Todays influence of world powers in Korea,
International relations of Czechoslovakia and its official standpoints to the wars,
Examples of related political propaganda in Czech scholarly sources of the time.

Economic and political reasons of violence;
Development of international relations and spreading of influence of world powers;
Economic and social consequences of wars as well as their influence on foreign relations;
Killing in wars, losses of lives and their influence on internal politics;
Development of foreing relations of Vietnam and Korea in particular stages of the wars;
Images of war in Vietnamese and Korean culture;
Comparison of northern and southern parts of Vietnam and Korea;
Question of unification;

Assessment methods

Students of the study programme Vietnamese Studies: 1) in the two thirds of the course: written test - at least 50 % of correct answers is needed to pass for final written examination; + 2) final written examination: at least 70 % of correct answers is required to pass the course. Students of other study programmes: only final written examination is compulsory: at least 50 % of correct answers is needed to pass the course.
