- Course objectives
- The aim of this course to impart the skills and knowledge required for qualitative field research in China as well as among the Oversease Chinese communities with focus on participant observation and conduction of interviews.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, students will be able to - develop their own research project based on the methodological framework of participant observation and conduction of interviews - evaluate and determine sources for their own project - demonstrate their ability to compile, assess, and analyze information.
- Syllabus
- The main topics which will be covered in this course are as following: 1. theoretical framework of "doing fieldwork" 2. theoretical approach to the three formats of interviews: structured, semi-structured and unstructured 3. preparation for fieldwork and interviews 4. analyzation and transcription of interviews 5. conducting fieldwork & interviews 6. development of research project 7. presentation of research design

- group discussions, fieldwork, presentations Some classes will be taught online on MSTeams - dates will be given in class!
- Assessment methods
- 1)Active participation throughout the term, 2) involvement in discussion on the various reading assignments, 3) development of a research project and its presentation during the “conference”in the end of the term
