Course objectives
The aim of the seminar is to acquaint the students with the basic development tendencies affecting the life of people in the Moravian countryside from the 1770s to 1848. The focus of the course is reading and subsequent interpretation of Czech written (or printed) sources. The seminar is designed as various chapters from rural history, combining an introductory lecture on the given topic and a subsequent demonstration of the issue on specific sources. Students will gain a basic overview of the Enlightenment reforms carried out during the reigns of Maria Theresa and Joseph II, which affected life in the countryside, and will be able to apply this information when interpreting sources from this period.
Learning outcomes
Based on the topics discussed, students will gain a basic insight into the structure and functioning of the Moravian village in the second half of the eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth century, including the labor system, the Raabs reform, the history of agriculture and the functioning of the village self-government.
