Prerequisites
The student submits their dissertation thesis in the extent and form that is common for the given type of work. Other requirements, such as the extent and form of the thesis will be designated by the Dean or, within the scope of their authority, by the Doctoral Board.

Course objectives
(1) In the thesis, the student submits the results of their work that were created during the studies of the doctoral programme. The supervisor and the head of the designated workplace are responsible for providing the student with suitable conditions necessary to meet the requirements of the doctoral programme.
(2) The thesis must contain original results, either already published or accepted for publication. Detailed requirements for the publication of results and the extent of the thesis will be designated by the Doctoral Board. These requirements must be published in the public section of the MU/faculty websites. A file of already published works or works accepted for publishing to the press or other type of publication which are related to the given field and have a comprehensive introduction to the issue and commentary by the student may also be recognized as a thesis.
(3) The thesis is written in the language in which the doctoral programme is conducted, or in a language which is specified for this purpose in the characteristics of the doctoral programme. For the doctoral programme conducted in Czech language, the faculty may issue a declaration that allows to submit the thesis in Slovak language. The thesis may always be submitted in English unless it is explicitly forbidden in the characteristics of the programme. With the consent of the Doctoral Board it is also possible to submit the thesis in a different language.
(4) The thesis is always submitted electronically via IS MU. If determined by the Doctoral Board, the thesis is also submitted in printed form. The thesis must also comply with the following requirements:
(a) If it is determined that the thesis should be submitted in printed form, the cover and the title page must have a uniform layout, the work must have a uniform format common to the faculty and all copies must be hard-bound. The number of copies is determined by the Doctoral Board.
b) If the student submits the results of collective scientific work in which they participated for the thesis defense, the parts of the student's work must be clearly marked. A statement by the supervisor confirming the student's authorship and evaluating their contribution must be attached.
Learning outcomes
The student is able to:
- self-reliably, creatively and scientifically work within the context of musical science (including independently gaining and using professional knowledge, skills and competences in at least two languages) which is proven by their own long-term research work within the field,
- research autonomously within the context of the field and present original results of their work,
- defend the conclusions of their research during the debate.
Syllabus
  • The subject is focused on the topics of older and newer Czech and European music cultures with special attention to some topics: musical activities of religious brotherhoods in Moravia in early modern period, music at the royal courts, Leoš Janáček, Alois Hába, research of the audience taste, relationship of the music theory and aesthetics of the 19th and 20th century.

Assessment methods
An oral exam in form of a public defense of the thesis based on the submission of the thesis. Points of the public defense: 1. introduction of the student and their overall study and professional profile by the supervisor, including the student's specific research outputs (i.e. the actual conferential, publicational or project activities) 2. introduction of two reviewer’s thesis reports 3. student’s reaction to the reviewer’s thesis reports 4. public discussion about the overall study and professional profile of the student, their thesis and related issues.
