Course objectives
PSA-16 Social Psychology I (Interpersonal Cognition) Social Psychology focuses on the area of Psychology which deals with the study of social behaviour and the mental experience of individuals in social context. The introduction to social psychology covers key themes of social context and balances between the classic and most current research, through their integration of important cultural issues and perspective. Subjects: Introduction. Social Cognition and Social Thinking. Causal Attribution and Social Knowledge. Socialization. Identity and the Self.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction into social psychology. Subject of study SP, SP in the context of related disciplines. History of SP. Basic trends in SP of 20th century, main SP schools of 20th century, current influential paradigms. Research methods in SP, possibilities of application in SP. 2.Social cognition a) self-relationship as a product of social interaction self-consciousness, self-confidence, self-defensive and self-supporting mechanisms. b)social perception and categorization. Scheme of processes of social perception first impression versus complex review. Creating of impressions of other people, connection between perception and motivation. Distortions and mistakes in social perception. Concept of social stereotype(auto and hetero-stereotype). Connection between perception and attribution processes c) interpretation of social reality theory of attribution. Heiders naďve psychology, Kellys implied theories of personality as a base of attribution approach. Theory of causal schemes, basic principles of attribution. Mistakes in attribution processes (fundamental attribution failure), attribution of success and failure. 3. Socialization and identity of personality a)Socialization of personality. Basic characteristics of socialization process, three exhibition levels of socialization: organism vs. environment, subject vs. object and personality vs. group. Imitation and identification as basic forms of social learning, importance of primary groups. Importance of early social experience and satisfaction of basal psychosocial needs for latter development. Life satisfaction and personal and social competence as a index of successful socialization. b) personal and social identity - basic determination, evolutional view of their development.
