Course objectives
The seminar wants to give to the students of the art history a basic introduction into the problem of relation between function and form. During its passing out, it is wanted an ability of the students to read art historical and theoretical writings critically and to extend their undestanding of the historical architecture.
Syllabus
  • 1. The architectural theory from Vitruvius to Durand in the 19th century. & 2. The Function and the Form in the architecture, Jacob Burckhardt and his "Kunstgeschichte als Aufgabengeschichte". & 3. The optional subjects of presentation I.: the romansque architecture. & 4. The optional subjects of presentation II.: the gothic architecture. & 5. The optional subjects of presentation III.: the renaissance architecture – the castle in Bohemia. & 6. The optional subjects of presentation IV: the renaissance architecture – the castle in Moravia. & 7. The optional subjects of presentation V.: the baroque architecture – church. & 8. The optional subjects of presentation VI.: the baroque architecture – residence and castle. & 9. The optional subjects of presentation VII.: the baroque architecture - „maison de plaisance“. & 10. The optional subjects of presentation VIII.: the architecture of the 19th century. &

Assessment methods
The course will be taught as a seminar with a short lecture of clarification of basic themes; the most importance aim of this seminar will be the acquaintence of students with literature on relation between function and form in architecture. There will be no exam for this course, but only a colloquium by class participation and the short verbal presentation about a monument.
