Course objectives
The lecture of Dr Čižmárová comprises six two-hour lessons focused on a summary of knowledge concerning dialects as variants of national languages, and dialectology – a linguistic branch treating dialects. In the first part of the lecture, the students will be acquainted with the basic dialectological terminology, the causes of origin of the dialects, their development and basic methods of their scholarly treating. They gain an overview of the dialects of individual Slavic languages, special attention will be paid to the dialects of the Czech national language. The other part of the lecture will apply to the geolinguistics as a specific method of examining dialects: its development as a research discipline, its methods, and its outcomes, especially linguistic atlases. Attention will be paid to the geolinguistic research of individual Slavic languages and their linguistic atlases, in greater detail the Czech Linguistic Atlas and supranational European atlases comprising Slavic languages: the Slavic Linguistic Atlas, the Atlas linguarum Europae, the Carpathian Linguistic Atlas. The other lectures will be concentrated to dialectal situation in East Slavic, West Slavic and South Slavic area.
