Course objectives
Upon successful completion of the course, students will have a general knowledge of the continuity between the antique classique literature and its heritage and tradition in the Middle Ages; they will be able to describe this process on particular literary works of Medieval Latin bouth Czech and Europaean.
Syllabus
  • 1. The Latin patristics: dubitations of the Church Fathers about the reception of the pagan classical civilisation in contrast to their dependence on it.
  • 2. Merovingian and Carolingian period.
  • 3. Medieval humanism of the 12th century AD.
  • 4. Late Middle Ages (Aetas Horatiana, Vergiliana, Ovidiana).
  • 5. Development of literary and cultural tradition presented by the ancient motifs and works of art, music and literature (continually recalled by the medieval authors).
