- Course objectives
- The aim of the course exploring the history of Ukrainian literature of the first half of the 19th century is to describe the period of the birth of the new Ukrainian literature in the context of the national revival. The students are expected to become familiar with how burlesque and travesty (Kotljarevskyj, the burlesque school), realism (Kvitka-Osnovjanenko) and romanticism (Borovykovskyj, Metlynskyj, etc.) gradually developed. The focus is on the works of Taras Shevchenko who was the leading figure of Ukrainian romanticism.
- Syllabus
- 1. The outline of the Ukrainian literature of the 19th century. The characteristics of the period of the national revival. Periodization, the developmental tendencies, literary streams and movements, genres.
- 2. Ivan Kotljarevskyj as the founder of the new era of Ukrainian literature. The Eneida poema.
- 3. The burlesque school and its leading figures.
- 4. Ukrainian FABLE and its authors – e.g. Hrebinka, Hulak-Artemovskyj, Hlibov.
- 5. Ukrainian romanticism: Its formation, characteristic features and contribution to Ukrainian literature.
- 6. Ukrainian romantic poets and their works (Borovykovskyj, Metlynskyj, Šaškevyč, etc.)
- 7. Taras Ševčenko – the leading figure of Ukrainian romanticism. His life and creative stages
- 8. Taras Ševčenko and his poetry: The genres, motives and poetics.
- 9. The analysis of Shevchenko’s poemas. Shevchenko in Bohemia.
- 10. Post-Shevchenko poetry. The works of Rudanskyj, Ščoholiv and Kuliš.
- 11. The beginnings of the new Ukrainian prose. Kvitka-Osnovjanenko as the founder of Ukrainian sentimentalism.
- 12. Marko Vovčok and his short-stories.
- 13. The birth of (the) Ukrainian novel (Kuliš, Svydnyckyj).
