Course objectives
At the end of the seminar the student will be able to: - understand the basic concepts of cultural memory; - apply the concepts to the filed of literary fiction; - refelect on specific features of postmodernism in Central Europe; - reflect on problematic aspects of Czech history in Central European context.
The seminar will focus on the representation of cultural memory in contemporary Czech prose writings. It will introduce the development of methodology in the field of cultural memory studies and its possible transfers to other domains of human sciences, especially to literary theory. In the context of contemporary Czech literature, the seminar will focus on the ways the authors choose to depict problematic themes of Czech history, particularly the legacy of totalitarian regimes in the 20th century and the question of Sudetenland and the post-war expulsion of Germans from Czechoslovakia. The seminar will also evoke the issue of representation of the holocaust.
