Course objectives
The aim of the course is to initiate students to think in a way which makes possible to deal with some basic types of problems occuring in the daily practice in translating French to Czech.
Syllabus
  • The first third of the semester focuses on issues of naming the extralinguistic reality. Within the remainig two thirds of the semester, students get familiar with basic translation techniques and practice them by translating various short texts, for which they get individual feedback from the teacher. During the whole semester, students read selected books, representing examples of excellent translation from French to Czech.
  • It is highly recommended that students enrol in this course in conjunction with Text and Discourse Analysis (FJPRA001).

Teaching methods
Apart from presenting the subject matter to students, the main teaching method used in this course is individual homework, written feedback by the teacher and a collective discussion on homeworks at the next lesson. The aim of the obligatory reading list is to "impregnate" students with inspiring examples of work.
Assessment methods
Translation of a text and individual discussion thereon. Conditions for admission to the examination include: at least 85% attendance of lessons, timely submission of homeworks and knowledge of the obligatory books.
