The course is designated for students in 1st cycle of psychology studies with at least the basic knowledge of cognitive and developmental psychology.

Course objectives
Following issues will be discussed in this course: the structure of the elementary investigation (anamnesis, assessment methods), some causes of school failure (immaturity; conduct disorders, attention disorders), specific study development disorders - dyslexia, dysgraphy, dysortography (definition, etiology, etc.). The goal is to take students up with the surrounding of PPP in Brno and with work contents of specialists. Program would be enriched with case studies.

  • 1. Introduction, course plan, recommended literature 2. System of pedagogical psychological counselling in the Czech Republic and its tasks (Matějček 1991, kap. 1) 3. The structure of basic psychological examination anamnesis, often used diagnostic methods (Matějček 1991, kap. 4) 4. Some reasons of school disadvantage: a) school immaturity (Matějček 1991, kap. 5, str. 112-118) b) lower grade of mental abilities (Matějček 1991, kap. 10, 11) c) ADD, ADHD (Matějček 1991, kap. 12, 13; Serfontein 1999) d) Learning disabilities (Basic information in Matějček 1995 definitions, concepts pgs. 17 31, etiology 72 86, characterization of dyslexia 109 142, dysgraphia 90 93, dysorthographia 87 90, dyscalculia 93 97 ). Every topic is illustrated by concrete diagnostic methods and case studies.

Teaching methods
The explanation of some causes of school failure. Illustration of topics on psychodiagnostic methods and case studies from child-counselling practice. Students will analyse case studies and will compare results of psychodiagnostic methods and discuss diagnostic conclusions and recommendations for parents and teachers.
Assessment methods
Type of the finalization will be specified by teacher at the begining of the semester. Individual activity in seminars (discussion of case studies) plus a short oral group presentation to prove comprehension of basic discussed consepts.
