- Course objectives
- The course chronologically explores the character of complex and sometimes opposing literary processes. The focus is on the characteristic features of various literary streams and movements of Ukrainian modern literature, e.g. the generation of the authors of the 1960s, historical prose, literature of Ukrainian emigration and also the poetics of the contemporary post-modern literature. Peculiarities in the development of various literary genres (poetry, prose and drama) are also closely examined.
- Syllabus
- 1. The outline of the 20th-century Ukrainian literature. Periodization, developmental tendencies, literary streams or movements, the reassessment of values.
- 2. Ukrainian modern literature: The programme, main organizations, literary streams or movements, characteristic features, peculiarities and its contribution to Ukrainian literature.
- 3. The leading figures of Ukrainian modern literature – e.g. Voronyj, Oles, Karmanskyj, Pačovskyj, etc.
- 4. Ukrainian symbolism - Pavlo Tyčyna.
- 5. Ukrainian futurism – Semenko and Škurupyj.
- 6. The lives and literary works of Ukrainian neo-classicists – e.g. Zerov, Fylypovyč, Draj-Chmara and Jurij Klen.
- 7. The artistic synthesis of Rylskyj.
- 8. The lyrical style of Sosjura.
- 9. The poetry of Plužnyk.
- 10. The literary works of Bažan.
- 11. Ukrainian prosaic styles in 1920’s and 1930’s – e.g. Jackyv and Chotkevyč.
- 12. V. Pidmohylnyj and his intellectual prose.
- 13. The prosaic talent of M. Chvyljovyj
