Course objectives
Lecture is devoted to Bible and its structure and its influence on German literature and culture from the beginning till nowadays. Special attention is devoted to translations of Bible into German.
Learning outcomes
Upon completition of the course, the student will be able to: summarize the basic genesis of the Bible and its structure; outline the traditions of the Bible translation into vernacular languages; characterize significant translations of the Bible into German; to highlight significant aspects and reflexions of the Bible in the German literature of individual epochs.
Syllabus
  • Bible and its origins and structure, its most important parts. The influence and role of Bible and biblical themes from the beginnings till nowadays. With special emphasis on medieval drama, reformation (Luther and his significance), baroque and romanticism and on Bible critic in 18. and 19. centuries. Biblical subjects in 20ieth century literature (T.Mann. E-Lasker-Schüler and others). Contemporary translations into German.
