Course objectives
This course offers an analysis of circumstances that lead to national revival of Orthodox nations of Ottoman Empire. It notices various premises areas (Greece, Serbia, Bulgaria, Orthodox Albanians) and maps phases of national revival. It points to connection between national revivals of different nations in Balkans and their mutual influencing and analyses role of Orthodox Church and Russia in these processes. It puts national revival into broader political situation in Balkans and to solution of Eastern Question, and finally it introduces students with most important authors (some of their works will be discussed during the seminar).
Learning outcomes
Absolvents of this course will gain overview of important history of Balkan Orthodox nations (Serbs, Bulgarians, Macedonians, Montenegrins, Greeks, Orthodox Albanians) in a comparative perspective. At the same time, they will be able to name their contributions to the world’s heritage treasure.

  • 1. Periodization and general characteristics of era.
  • 2. Situation of Orthodox nations in Ottoman Empire in 18th century.
  • 3. Prerequisites for national revival in Balkans.
  • 4. Differences in the role of Orthodox Church in forming of national revival (Patriarchate of Constantinople, role of Serbian Orthodox Church).
  • 5. Role of Russia in national revival of individual Balkan Orthodox nations.
  • 6. Mutual influence on cultural environment of individual Orthodox nations.
  • 7. Beginning of Greek national revival, Rigas Velestinlis and his role in Orthodox Balkans.
  • 8. Greek national culture in the era of affirming independent Greek state.
  • 9. Serbian national revival: linkage between cultural center of Serbs in Habsburg Monarchy and Serbian areas of Balkan.
  • 10. Dositej Obradović, Vuk Stefanović Karadžić and other protagonists of Serbian National Revival.
  • 11. Particularities of Bulgarian national revival, its linkage with Greek and Serbian environment.
  • 12. Protagonists of Bulgarian national revival.
  • 13. Role of Orthodox Albanians in national revival of Albanian nation.

Lectures, home reading, class discussion.
Assessment methods
This course is based on both lectures and seminars. Prerequisites for granting the credit: regular attendance (min. 70 %) and solid home preparation on weekly basis, participation in class discussion. Oral exam.
