- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to present a complex language, literature and culture picture of particular author of the so called "post-classical" period of Roman literature. Apuleius, whose work represents the peak of Roman Second Sophistic, is introduced as a typical example. On the background, typical genres and characteristics of the above mentioned period are analyzed.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course students should be able to:
- translate selected passages of Apuleius' literary and scholoarly works;
- comment on these passages both linguistically and stylistically;
- discuss literary context of Apuleius' works;
- describe literary devices used in his works. - Syllabus
- 1. Apuleius: priest, philosopher, orator or literate?
- 2. Literary context of Apuleius' works: so-called Second Sophistics.
- 3. Philosophical works: a) De Socrate et eius dogmate. De deo Socratis. Introduction.
- 4. Philosophical works: b) De Socrate et eius dogmate. De deo Socratis. Textual analysis: linguistic devices (epitheta, grecisms, diminutives etc.), argumentation methods, stylistic and literary devices.
- 5. Philosophical works: c) Platonician or sophist?
- 6. Rhetorical-scholarly works: a) Pro se de magia, Florida. Introduction.
- 7. Rhetorical-scholarly works: b) Pro se de magia, Florida. Textual analysis: linguistic devices (epitheta, grecisms, diminutives etc.), argumentation methods, stylistic and literary devices.
- 8. Rhetorical-scholarly works: c) Talented scholar and orator or fallacious magician and seducer?
- 9. Novelistic work: a) Metamorhoses sive Asinus aureus. Introduction.
- 10. Novelistic work: b) Metamorhoses sive Asinus aureus. Textual analysis: linguistic devices (epitheta, grecisms, diminutives etc.), argumentation methods, stylistic and literary devices.
- 11. Novelistic work: c) Mystery initiate or ironical critic? Autobiography or fiction?
- 12. Novelistic work: d) Novel, fairy-tale, satire, parody: Influence of Metamorphoses in later literature (esp. Renaissance).
- 13. Final synthesis: Apuleius: Sophist and Platonist, priest and ironic, orator and comic.
