Course objectives
This series of lectures and seminars is based on methods of Latin paleography, codicology, epigraphy and papyrology and aims to provide students with a basic overview of the development of Latin script in antiquity and the Early Middle Ages and of preserved sources of archaeological and paleographic writing for the period from 7th century BC until the 8th century AD. For this period of history, students should become familiar with: a) the typology and dating of Latin scripts from books; documents and inscriptions; b) paleographic characteristics of individual script types; c) paleographic analysis and comparisons; d) transcription of ancient and early medieval Latin texts; e) an overview of basic literature, including the history of research on the Latin script of this period; f) the textual tradition of ancient texts and the transformation of book culture during "media revolutions" from antiquity to the beginning of the Carolingian Renaissance; g) the basic typology of papyrus literary and documentary Latin texts.
