Course objectives
The course presents the main historical periods of French literature in Africa and the Middle East. This course is completed by the presentation of several eminent authors.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to:
- to identify and summarize important features of this literature
- identify the main aesthetic features of this literature in the texts

  • The course is organised into 4 areas of study of varying intensity: 1/ French literature in Africa and the Middle East, historical and literary elements 2/French colonial empire and early writings 3/Independence: movements, currents and genres. 4/Contemporary writing

Teaching methods
Lecture: description of the literary field, explanation and definition of basic notions and their demonstration on concrete texts by concrete authors. Seminar: Application of the acquired theoretical knowledge on authentic texts. In the form of a presentation the students show their capability to connect their theoretical knowledge while working with a concrete text.
Assessment methods
Seminar paper and oral exam. Students are expected to participate actively in the seminars.
