Course objectives
The course introduces students to the current linguistic situation in Scandinavia. It lays the groundwork for all subsequent linguistic disciplines, focusing on terminology and methodological approaches in linguistics.
Learning outcomes
Students will gain an understanding of the contemporary linguistic situation in Scandinavia, become proficient in using linguistic terminology, and be able to differentiate between the main branches of modern linguistics. Students will apply this knowledge in general analyses with a focus on Scandinavian languages.

  • Subject and division of linguistics
  • Morphology, syntax, lexicology
  • Phonology, etymology, semantics, pragmatics
  • Classification of Germanic languages, with an emphasis on North Germanic languages
  • Overview of linguistic methods and approaches, covering various linguistic aspects
  • Overview of Norwegian language development from a broad perspective
  • The Sami languages
