Course objectives
The purpose of this course - as well as the courses that follow in the following semesters (Greek Language Competence IΙ, ΙΙΙ and IV), is to prepare students for the C1/C2 level, according to the CEFR. For this reason, grammatical phenomena related to the C1/C2 level are discussed in the lessons, and students are given tasks aimed at improving their speaking and writing. Also, on a regular basis, students translate selected texts from Czech into Greek or vice versa.

The individual objectives of the course are the following:
- Expansion of Vocabulary
- Practicing speaking
- Practicing writing
- Consolidation of grammatical rules
- Practicing Listening
- Improving translation from Greek to Czech and vice versa
Learning outcomes
The general aim of the courses " Greek Language Competence I, II, III and IV" is to prepare students for the C1/C2 level. In particular, after the end of the course, students will be able to:
- understand and follow discussions on various topics and in different contexts
- use Greek to express themselves on different topics and situations
- write academic presentations in Greek
- read and understand texts of different kinds (newspaper articles, professional letters, academic articles, advertising texts, etc.)
- write well-structured texts of different types (articles' summaries, academic presentations, professional letters, etc.)
- translate from Greek into Czech and vice versa texts of different genres using correctly grammar and vocabulary at C1/C2 level
Syllabus
  • In the courses "Greek Language Competence I" and "Greek Language Competence I" the book "Καλειδοσκόπιο" is used. In the first semester and in the course "Greek Language Competence I" the following topics are covered, divided into 14 weeks of the semester:
  • - Greek society and Greek Family
  • Text 1: "Long live the family"
  • Text 2: "Mimetism"
  • Text 3: "The dowry in Greece"
  • - Gender Equality.The position of women in Greek society.
  • Text 1: "The anatomy of a crime of honour"
  • Text 2: "Sexism in language affects thought"
  • - Political and recent political history
  • Text 1: "The bigot"
  • Text 2: "Political system, constitution and institutions in Greece"
  • Text 3: "Legislative, executive and judicial power"
  • Grammatical categories analysed in the lessons: compound verbs, masculine nouns with two endings, diminutives, adjectives ending in -ών/-ούσα/-ον

Teaching methods
The course includes reading and oral discussions in class, student presentations in class, as well as weekly homework assignments. More specifically, every week, students are given texts in the classroom, which are being read and discussed. During courses, speaking skills and vocabulary are mainly practised. Moreover, the students are given various tasks, which aim at improving their reading, speaking, listening and writing skills. Thus, every week they should prepare a text and a translation regarding a specific topic agreed upon with the teacher.
Assessment methods
The assessment methods and criteria are defined as follows:
- Active presence (70 % of the lessons) & participation in the courses
- Submitting written assignments on weekly basis and on time
- Written test at the end of the semester. To pass the test, the student must reach at least 65% of correct answers.
