Course objectives
The aim of the course is to put the history of Spanish and Latin American literature into its historical and cultural background. Another aim is to point to relations between Spanish and/or Latin American literature and European literature in general.
Learning outcomes
Student: - will be able to identify and summarize the main aspects of the most important Latin-American literature movements, - will know the most important authors and genres and their main characteristics, - will be able to analyse the most important Latin-American literary works using the right tootls and theoretical frames.

  • 1. On the studies of Hispanic American literature.
  • 2. Historiography and epic poetry in the colonies.
  • 3. Theatre and poetry in the Renessance and the Baroque.
  • 4. Literature in the period of transition.
  • 4. Romanticism.
  • 5. Realism.
  • 6. Gaucho literature. Readings: - Poesía lírica, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. - El matadero, Esteban Echeverría. - Sab, Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda. - Martín Fierro, José Hernández. - Selección de textos de cronistas, de La Araucana y de Valle y Caviedes.
